Prez. Mahama Arrives In Jamaica For State Visit

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Kingston for a four-day state visit to promote the global push for reparatory justice, enhance cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean and deepen Ghana’s long standing relationship with Jamaica.

On Sunday, August 2, the President’s plane landed at the Norman Manley International Airport, where he was welcomed by a high-level Jamaican delegation.

The warm welcome marked the beginning of a visit which is expected to strengthen diplomatic ties and enhance political, cultural and economic cooperation between the two Commonwealth countries.

The state visit is a symbol of the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between Ghana and Jamaica, rooted in a common African heritage and strengthened through decades of diplomatic relations.

The main purpose of President Mahama’s visit is to observe the progress of the international movement for reparatory justice.

Ghana and Jamaica have led the way in calling for meaningful conversation and proper reparations for impacted communities and global recognition of the long-lasting effects of slavery, colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade.

The visit will provide both countries with an opportunity to explore new areas of cooperation in trade, investment, education, tourism, agriculture and the creative industries, as well as discussions on reparatory justice.

The visit of President Mahama is also expected to boost commercial ties and foster more people-to-people exchanges.
