Manchester United has officially dismissed Ruben Amorim from his role as head coach, bringing an end to a turbulent 14-month tenure at Old Trafford. The club confirmed the decision on Monday, 5th January emphasising that the move was taken to give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Amorim, 40, joined United in November 2024 from Sporting CP on a long-term contract. A move that marked one of the club’s most high-profile appointments in recent years.
Over 63 matches in all competitions, Amorim’s United side recorded 24 wins, 18 draws and 21 defeats, a win rate significantly below the club’s expectations. United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, their lowest league position in decades and suffered a Europa League final defeat, missing out on European qualification. In the current campaign, the team sat 6th in the table at the time of his departure.
Official Statement
In his final press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United, Amorim drew attention for publicly criticising aspects of the club’s setup, insisting he wanted to be viewed as “the manager” rather than merely the head coach.
Manchester United has appointed Darren Fletcher, the club’s under-18s coach and former first-team midfielder, as interim head coach while a permanent successor is sought. Fletcher will lead the team for the upcoming Premier League and FA Cup fixtures.
The club’s leadership affirmed their appreciation for Amorim’s efforts and contributions, thanking him and wishing him well in his future endeavours.
