A candid and thought-provoking conversation unfolded on The Big Convo as the Culture Squad and Dr Christian Aminarh tackled one of society’s most debated topics: sex before marriage. Stripping away performance and public perception, the panel leaned into honesty, exploring religion, health, culture and lived realities.
From the onset, the tone was clear: this was not about judgment, but understanding.
The conversation began with an attempt to define fornication, a word often used but rarely unpacked.
From a religious standpoint, particularly within Christianity, it was described as any sexual activity outside of marriage, referencing biblical texts such as 1 Corinthians 6:18, which urges believers to “flee from sexual immorality.”
However, the discussion quickly evolved beyond scripture.
One panelist challenged the rigidity of the definition, arguing that marriage itself has historically been more than just a union between two individuals. In many traditional societies, it involved families, lineage, inheritance and social order, meaning sexual relationships had broader consequences beyond just two people.
This reframed the conversation:
Was sex before marriage originally a moral issue, or a societal structure designed to protect systems?
Shifting from belief systems to science, the health perspective introduced a completely different framework.
According to Dr Aminarh, sex is not approached morally, but through wellbeing and risk management, focusing on: consent, protection (against STIs and infections), prevention of unplanned pregnancies and genetic compatibility (e.g., sickle cell considerations).
Interestingly, when asked whether couples should “test compatibility” before marriage, the medical stance leaned toward communication over experimentation.
One of the most heated parts of the discussion centered on whether sexual compatibility should be explored before marriage.
Some argued that: experience helps individuals understand preferences, lack of exploration can lead to dissatisfaction later and sexual incompatibility has contributed to marital breakdowns.
Others countered: compatibility is developed, not discovered instantly, communication is more important than experience and trying does not guarantee long-term satisfaction.
The conversation also touched on how today’s world shaped by social media and exposure has changed attitudes toward sex.
Beyond religion and medicine lies the reality on the ground.
People today are exploring relationships differently and questioning traditional norms while balancing personal desires with cultural expectations.
Some choose abstinence.
Others prioritize compatibility.
Many are simply navigating the grey areas.
