Tanzanian social media influencer Jennifer Jovin has reportedly been arrested on charges of treason following a viral TikTok video that has sparked widespread debate across the country.

According to local media reports, Jovin’s dance video, which gained massive traction online, was deemed disrespectful to national symbols and allegedly interpreted by authorities as undermining state authority. While details surrounding the specific content of the video remain unclear, the incident has ignited conversations about freedom of expression and the boundaries of creative content in Tanzania.

Eyewitnesses claim Jovin was detained in Dar es Salaam earlier this week after the video circulated widely across various social media platforms. The influencer, known for her energetic dance content and lifestyle videos, boasts thousands of followers on TikTok and Instagram.

Human rights advocates and digital activists have since called for her immediate release, describing the charges as excessive and politically motivated. Many have taken to social media using the hashtag #FreeJenniferJovin to demand justice and highlight the shrinking space for digital expression in Tanzania.

As of now, neither Jovin nor her legal representatives have publicly commented on the matter. Authorities have also yet to issue an official statement detailing the specific grounds for the treason charge.
