Tearful Sherri Shepherd Rises to Tyra Banks’ Defense After Netflix AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL Documentary Sparks Backlash
Sherri Shepherd
In a heartfelt moment on her daytime talk show, Sherri, Emmy‑winning host Sherri Shepherd offered an emotional defense of supermodel and creator Tyra Banks amid the intense backlash triggered by Netflix’s controversial documentary Reality Check: INSIDE AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL.

The three‑part docuseries, which debuted on Netflix earlier this month, has reignited debates about the legacy of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, the reality competition that aired from 2003 to 2018 and cemented Tyra Banks’ status as a trailblazer in television and fashion. While the documentary sheds light on troubling moments from the show, including accounts of psychological pressure and unfair treatment of contestants the response from Shepherd underscores the complexity of assessing the show’s cultural impact more than two decades later.

Visibly moved during Tuesday’s broadcast, Shepherd admitted she stayed up all night watching Reality Check, compelled by the nostalgic and revealing footage. She acknowledged that many viewers are upset with how Banks is portrayed, particularly around sensitive accounts raised in the series but urged audiences to view the show within the context of the early 2000s reality TV landscape.

“Reality TV was a wild west back then, Everybody was trying to outdo everybody to stay on the air.” Shepherd said.
She suggested that the industry’s lack of safeguards like psychological support and sensitivity training behind the scenes, contributed to missteps that would be unacceptable today.

Shepherd also passionately defended Banks’ role as a pioneer for diversity. She reminded viewers that early in ANTM’s life, Tyra Banks fought to cast Blacks, a commitment that was groundbreaking for the fashion world at the time.

While firmly supportive of Tyra Banks’ larger mission, Shepherd didn’t dismiss the criticism outright. She conceded that the show caused harm to some contestants and said Tyra Banks should take accountability.

As Reality Check continues to spark discussion online and among fans, Shepherd’s defense of Tyra Banks highlights a deeper cultural tension.
