Thirty-seven inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison sat for the Teacher Licensure Examination on Monday, September 14, 2026, as part of the Ghana Prisons Service’s efforts to support rehabilitation through education.

The inmates, who had completed their degree programmes, took the examination inside the prison facility under strict supervision by two external invigilators, with support from prison officers.

In a statement, the Ghana Prisons Service said the initiative forms part of its commitment to using education as a tool for the reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.

The Service noted that providing inmates with opportunities to pursue education and acquire professional qualifications would improve their prospects of securing productive livelihoods after their release.

Participation in the examination is expected to equip the inmates with qualifications that could enable them to pursue careers in teaching and other productive fields, helping them reintegrate successfully and contribute positively to society after serving their sentences.
