The Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) 2026 is set to take a major step towards making African cinema more accessible to local audiences by adopting Twi as its predominant language throughout this year’s festival.

Scheduled for September 24–27, 2026, at Golden Eagle Cinemas in Kumasi, the festival will incorporate Twi across several aspects of the programme, including MCing, introductions, selected panel discussions, conversations and audience question-and-answer sessions.

According to the festival, the decision goes beyond simply using Twi as a communication language. It forms part of BSIFF’s broader commitment to promoting local-language cinema and creating spaces where African audiences can experience, discuss and participate in the business of film in the languages they use in their everyday lives.

“BSIFF 2026 will predominantly speak Twi,” the festival stated, emphasising that while Twi will be the main language in Kumasi this year, the underlying principle extends to Africa’s many indigenous languages.

The festival believes African languages have a rightful place in cinema—not only on screen but also in the conversations and business surrounding the industry.

To ensure the language shift does not exclude international guests and non-Twi speakers, BSIFF will provide English translations alongside Twi where necessary. Similarly, when English is used during sessions, Twi translation will be provided to ensure local audiences can continue to participate fully.

The festival describes the initiative as an effort to bring cinema closer to its audience rather than creating a divide between languages.

“This is not about excluding one language for another. It is about bringing cinema closer to the people,” BSIFF said.

With its focus on language, culture and inclusion, BSIFF 2026 is positioning the festival as a space where local audiences can engage with the film industry in a language that feels familiar, while still maintaining accessibility for its international community.

BSIFF 2026 will take place from September 24 to 27 at Golden Eagle Cinemas in Kumasi.
