Police To Begin Full Automated Traffic Enforcement With TRAFFITECH-GH From October 1

The Ghana Police Service will commence full implementation of its automated traffic law enforcement programme, TRAFFITECH-GH, on October 1, 2026, in a major step to tackle road indiscipline and improve compliance with traffic regulations.

Operated through the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the system will use cameras and Personal Data Assistant (PDA) devices to detect traffic offences across the country’s roads. 

Captured violations will be reviewed before Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) are issued to vehicle owners or drivers via SMS. Each notice will detail the offence, the applicable fine, location, date and time, and vehicle registration number.

According to the Police Service, TRAFFITECH-GH aims to strengthen enforcement, curb indiscipline among road users, and reduce road traffic crashes and related casualties. Fines are to be paid electronically through the Ghana.gov platform, typically within 14 days. The registered vehicle owner remains liable for the violation regardless of who was driving at the time.

The programme is backed by the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025, and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026. It follows pilot operations and the training of about 1,000 MTTD personnel. Equipment includes in-vehicle cameras, handheld devices and other monitoring tools. Officials have stressed that the technology will complement, rather than replace, the physical presence of police officers on the roads.

The Ghana Police Service has urged motorists, drivers and vehicle owners to obey road traffic laws, exercise greater caution and support the rollout of TRAFFITECH-GH to promote safer roads. Offenders are advised to verify that any SMS notification carries the sender ID GPS-MTTD before taking action.
