Azonto Still Lives - DopeNation Says

Ghanaian music duo DopeNation has weighed in on the trajectory of Azonto, one of the country’s most significant cultural exports of the early 2010s, asking whether Ghana fully capitalized on the moment or allowed it to slip away.

On 3Music TV’s Big Convo segment on the Culture Daily show, the twin brothers discussed the wave’s impact and the question of redefining Azonto for today’s landscape rather than treating it as a closed chapter.

They noted that the genre has not died although this current generation is not doing much of it. 

“Azonto still lives. We are the ones who are trying to shove it down. It’s never going to die,” DopeNation said. 

B2 also predicted that the genre will evolve to have a new name in the future. 

“We will die and other people will take over,  maybe that time they will not even call it Azonto. So we should realize that we’re in a different generation and we need to resonate with the world,” B2 said. 

Azonto emerged from Ghana’s coastal Ga communities as both a dance and music style, evolving from traditional forms like Kpanlogo. It surged to national and international prominence around 2010–2013 through tracks such as Sarkodie and E.L’s U Go Kill Me, Guru’s Lapaz Toyota, and Fuse ODG’s Azonto.
