The 69th Eurovision Song Contest is officially underway, and Basel is buzzing with excitement for a week of music and celebration from May 11 to May 17. The city is pulling out all the stops, leading up to the big showdown on Saturday, where 37 performers will battle it out to crown the host country for next year’s contest.
The party started with a bang on Sunday, May 11, thanks to Switzerland’s 2024 win by NEMO and their song The Code in Malmö, Sweden. Basel rolled out the red—well, turquoise—carpet for the opening ceremony, welcoming artists from 37 countries with open arms. Swiss President Conrad Cramer greeted each performer before they strutted down the iconic carpet, fans cheering their hearts out as each contestant’s song blared through the speakers. Photographers snapped away, capturing the smiles and sparkles.
After the carpet, the delegations hopped onto vintage trams and buses for a massive parade through Basel’s city center. Picture this: nearly 2,000 people—marching bands, dancers, volunteers, students, and even folks from the Zurich Pride Parade—filling the streets with color and sound. The procession wound through the city for about an hour and a half, ending at the Eurovision Village stage, where the crowd went wild for the arriving performers. Security was tight, keeping everything smooth and safe.
It was the perfect kickoff to a week of music, unity, and national pride. Basel is ready to shine as the world watches 37 artists compete for Eurovision glory on May 17. Here’s to an epic week of showstopping performances and good vibes!
