Cartoon Network has officially launched Iyanu, a new animated series that premiered on April 5th, 2025, at 9:30 AM, followed by its streaming debut on Max on April 6 . This marks a significant milestone as one of the first children’s cartoons to spotlight Nigerian culture, history, and mythology.
Created by Nigerian writer and director Roye Okupe, Iyanu is based on his 2022 graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder. The series follows a teenage orphan girl named Iyanu, who discovers her extraordinary abilities and embarks on a quest with her friends and a magical leopard to save her people from an ancient evil known as the Corrupt. Set in the Yoruba-inspired land of Yorubaland, the show emphasizes themes of self-discovery, empathy, and cultural pride.
The series features an all-African voice cast, including Nigerian talents such as Adesua Etomi-Wellington and Stella Damasus. The opening theme, YOU ARE is performed by Grammy-winning Afropop artist Yemi Alade, adding an authentic musical touch to the show.
Critics have praised Iyanu for its rich storytelling and cultural representation. Screen Rant described the series as a blend of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Black Panther, highlighting its strong animation and world-building.
For viewers in Sub-Saharan Africa, Iyanu is set to premiere on Showmax on June 13th, 2025. The series aims to entertain and inspire children aged 6 to 12, offering a unique blend of action, adventure, and meaningful lessons rooted in Nigerian traditions.
