Chairman Wontumi Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison

The Accra High Court has handed the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known s Chairman Wontumi 20 years imprisonment for his involvement in illegal mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.

The Criminal Division of the High Court presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay delivered the sentence on Monday, July 20, 2026, ending the case that began months ago. 

In accordance with the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended, Justice Kocuvie-Tay had already found Mr. Antwi-Boasiako guilty on all six counts, including the assignment of mineral rights without authorisation and the deliberate facilitation of an unlicensed mining activity.

The Court considered gravity of the offence and mineral resources being property of the State, undermining regulations. 

Wontumi was found guilty on Counts One and Four, while Akonta Mining Limited was convicted on Counts Three and Six. 

On Count 1: 20 years

Count 3: Pay fine of 15,000 pay

Count 4: 20 years with hard labour and 10, 000 penalty unit

Count 6: pay fine of 15,000

The sentences will run concurrently and it is within the legal range of 15 to 25 years for the charges.
