Ciara Receives Beninese Citizenship in Historic Ceremony Honoring African Diaspora

Global R&B icon Ciara has officially been granted Beninese citizenship, in a landmark ceremony that celebrates reconnection with ancestral roots. The emotional event took place on July 26th, 2025, in Cotonou and coincided with the United Nations Day for Women and Girls of African Descent.

Ciara was one of three Afro-descendants recognized under Benin’s landmark Law No. 2024‑31, which offers a legal pathway to citizenship for descendants of sub-Saharan Africans forcibly deported through the transatlantic slave trade. The law, passed in September 2024, aims to provide historical redress and foster reconnection between Benin and its global diaspora.

In a ceremony attended by top government officials including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice, and Culture, Ciara received her official certificate of citizenship. Dressed in traditional Beninese attire, she took to Instagram shortly after, declaring: “I am Beninoise”, a powerful statement that has since gone viral.

The Grammy-winning artiste was joined by fellow honorees Joseph Gabendy and Smeralda David Romuald, all of whom were selected through Benin’s diaspora initiative that encourages genealogical reconnection through DNA testing, authenticated family histories, and verified civil records.

Benin, once a major point of departure during the slave trade, is now actively working to acknowledge its role and welcome back the descendants of those displaced. It’s estimated that more than 1.5 million enslaved Africans were shipped out through Benin’s ports, particularly from the coastal cities of Ouidah and Porto-Novo.

“This isn’t just paperwork—it’s a bridge to healing, a symbol of reclamation and cultural renewal,” said a representative from Benin’s Ministry of Culture during the ceremony.

Under the new law, applicants must be at least 18, not hold another African citizenship, and visit Benin at least once during the process. Citizenship is initially granted on a provisional basis, valid for up to three years, after which recipients may be eligible for full legal status and a Beninese passport. However, voting rights and access to certain public sector roles may remain restricted under Article 36 of the country’s nationality code.

Beyond the ceremony, Ciara used her visit to engage deeply with Beninese history. She toured major cultural landmarks such as the “Door of No Return” and the Slave Route Trail in Ouidah, capturing moments that were later featured on the June–July cover of Rolling Stone Africa.

Her presence not only elevated awareness of Benin’s citizenship program but also highlighted a wider movement among diasporic Africans to reclaim identity, ancestry, and belonging. Several African nations—including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Senegal—have launched similar initiatives aimed at reconnecting with the African diaspora.

Benin’s program is more than a symbolic gesture. It represents:
Legal Recognition of diasporic identity.
Cultural Healing through reconnection with ancestral heritage.
A bold Pan-African vision of unity, inclusion, and transformation.

Ciara’s involvement has brought global attention to this effort, reminding the world that heritage is not just remembered—it’s lived, reclaimed, and celebrated.
