Dr. Aminarh Shares Lessons on the Science of Taste and Resilience
Dr. Chris Aminarh
Ever stopped to think about what’s going on with your tongue? Most of us don’t—until Dr. Chris Aminarh stepped onto 3Music TV’s Big Conversation and turned it into a science class you actually want to sit through. He zeroed in on something called lingua plicata—those funky furrows some tongues have—and suddenly, this little muscle in your mouth became way more interesting than you’d ever imagined.
“It’s not a scratch or some weird injury,” Dr. Aminarh said, leaning into the mic with that cool, steady vibe he’s got. “It’s just how some tongues roll.” It is a surface with grooves and ridges, like a tiny roadmap etched right there. And it’s not as rare as you’d think—6.8% of people have it, but if you’re over 40, that jumps to as much as 40%. He broke it down like a pro, explaining how this spongy, muscular thing we use every day isn’t just for talking or tasting—it’s a window into bigger stories. “It’s tied to stuff like Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, this rare neurological thing, or even Down syndrome,” he said. “Probably genetic, but don’t worry—you can’t catch it.”
What really hooks you, though, is how he mapped out the tongue’s taste zones. “Sweet’s right up front at the tip,” he said, almost like he was daring you to test it with a piece of candy. “Salty’s along the sides, sour’s higher up, and bitter’s way in the back.” It’s like your tongue’s got its own geography, divvying up flavors like a pro chef. But lingua plicata? It doesn’t mess with that. “Taste stays the same,” he reassured. The catch is those grooves—they can snag food bits if you’re not careful, so he’s all about brushing it down and swishing some mouthwash. “And if spicy stuff stings,” he added, “maybe skip the pepper soup for a day.”
Then he took it deeper, connecting the dots to saliva. “Those glands under your tongue? They’re pumping out spit before you even swallow,” he said, marveling at how it jumpstarts digestion like some hidden superpower. “And the tongue itself? It’s a tank—burn it, bite it, whatever—it just keeps coming back.” You could hear the awe in his voice, like he’s still blown away by it after all his years of study. For anyone who’s ever doodled through a biology lecture, this was the kind of thing that makes you perk up—small, everyday stuff revealing how wild our bodies really are.
Dr. Aminarh didn’t just throw facts at you; he made it stick. He painted this picture of an organ we barely think about, doing its job day in, day out, dropping clues about our health if we’d just look. “It’s tougher than we give it credit for,” he said, and you could almost see students scribbling that down—or at least sneaking a glance in the mirror later. Lingua plicata might not be on your next exam, but after this, you’ll never see your tongue the same way. It’s not just there—it’s telling a story, and Dr. Aminarh’s the guy who cracked it open for us.
