Dr. Chelsey Green, a renowned violinist and music educator, has made history as the first Black woman elected Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Recording Academy. Effective June 1, 2025, Green’s appointment follows her tenure as a trustee since 2021 and her leadership in diversity initiatives, including the Academy’s Black Music Collective.
Her election marks a milestone for the organization behind the GRAMMY Awards, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity. Fans and industry peers have celebrated Green’s trailblazing role, noting her work as a performer in films like THE COLOR PURPLE in 2023 and her advocacy for underrepresented artistes.
Green, a professor at Berklee College of Music, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having performed with artistes like Stevie Wonder and Lizzo, and released her own albums, including 2023’s REENVISIONED. Her leadership will guide the Academy’s mission to support music creators, with a focus on equity and innovation.
The Academy’s recent efforts, such as expanding global categories for the 2025 GRAMMYs, align with Green’s vision. Her historic election follows Tammy Hurt’s tenure as the first female chair, continuing a legacy of breaking barriers in music governance.
The significance of Green’s appointment resonates widely, with social media posts praising her as a role model for Black women in music. Her work in films like THE COLOR PURPLE and MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM showcases her versatility, blending classical and contemporary styles.
While some express hope for further Academy reforms under her leadership, Green’s track record suggests impactful change. As she prepares to shape the Academy’s future, including the 2026 GRAMMYs, her election bolsters her as a transformative figure.
