Dr. Chris Aminarh Explains Genetic Risks of Sickle Cell in Family Planning
Dr Chris Aminarh

Dr. Chris Aminarh has provided a clear and insightful breakdown of the genetic risks associated with sickle cell disorder, emphasizing its implications for couples planning to start a family. Speaking in the context of World Sickle Cell Day on June 19, 2025, he explained that when both partners are AS (sickle cell trait carriers), there is a 25% chance—one in four—of their child inheriting SS, the severe form of sickle cell disease. This genetic combination, he noted, often results in significant challenges, including frequent hospitalizations, increased financial burdens, and emotional strain on families due to the chronic nature of the condition, which can involve pain crises and compromised immunity.
Dr. Aminarh advised that individuals with SS, the full sickle cell disease, should ideally partner with AA individuals—those without the sickle cell trait—to minimize the risk of passing the condition to their children. He clarified that an SS and AA pairing typically results in AS offspring, who are carriers but do not exhibit the severe symptoms of the disease. For couples where both partners carry the trait or one has SS, Dr. Aminarh highlighted proactive solutions to prevent passing the condition to offspring. He recommended adoption as a viable option for those wishing to build a family without genetic risks, as well as in vitro fertilization (IVF) coupled with pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT). This advanced technique allows for genetic screening of embryos before conception to ensure they do not carry the SS genotype, though he acknowledged its high cost and limited accessibility.
Dr. Aminarh’s discussion underscored the importance of early genotype testing to inform family planning decisions, particularly in relationships where sickle cell could be a factor. He stressed that understanding genetic compatibility early can prevent the heartache of discovering risks after years of emotional investment, especially given the lifelong care required for a child with SS. His insights on Culture Daily serve as a vital call to action for couples to prioritize health screenings and explore ethical reproductive options.
