Released on November 15, 2011, TAKE CARE, the second studio album by Canadian rapper and singer Drake, marked a pivotal moment in his career and modern hip-hop. The album, a follow-up to his debut THANK ME LATER, has achieved remarkable commercial success, reportedly surpassing 11 million units sold in the United States alone. This milestone underscores Drake’s ability to blend introspective lyricism with melodic R&B influences, creating a sound that resonated deeply with audiences. Despite an early leak nine days before its release, Take Care debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 631,000 copies in its first week, and its enduring appeal has  bolstered its place as one of the best-selling hip-hop albums of all time.

TAKE CARE distinguished itself from Drake’s debut by offering a more cohesive and atmospheric sound, driven by producers like Noah "40" Shebib, Boi-1da, and T-Minus. The album’s minimalist R&B, pop, and electronica influences, paired with Drake’s introspective lyrics about failed romances, fame, and personal struggles, struck a chord with listeners. Tracks like TAKE CARE (featuring Rihanna), MARVINS ROOM, and THE MOTTO became cultural touchstones, with the latter popularizing the term YOLO. The album’s emotional depth and sonic innovation earned Drake his first Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2013, cementing its critical and commercial legacy.

The claim of TAKE CARE selling over 11 million units in the U.S. reflects its dominance in an era when streaming and digital downloads reshaped music consumption. While earlier reports noted the album reaching 10 million units by February 2024, achieving diamond status, the additional million units highlight its sustained popularity. The album’s sales figures include traditional album sales, digital downloads, and streaming equivalents . Its chart performance, with five successful singles and a lasting presence on the Billboard 200, underscores Drake’s knack for crafting timeless hits. Beyond numbers, TAKE CARE influenced a generation of artistes, popularizing the said Toronto sound and blurring the lines between rap and R&B.

TAKE CARE remains a cornerstone of Drake’s discography and a demonstration of his commercial prowess. As of April 2013, it had already sold 2 million copies in the U.S., and its trajectory to 11 million units reflects its staying power in the streaming age. The album’s success is part of Drake’s broader dominance, with 170 million records sold worldwide and recognition as the RIAA’s top-selling digital artiste. Fans and critics alike continue to celebrate Take Care for its vulnerability and innovation, with many considering it a no-skip classic. As Drake’s career evolves, Take Care stands as a defining work that reshaped hip-hop and solidified his status as a global superstar.
