Ghanaian Fashion Designer Dede Ayite Makes History at Tony Awards

Ghanaian-born fashion designer, Dede Ayite, has become the first Black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play. The historic win came at the 77th Tony Awards, held on June 16th, 2024, at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater in New York City.


Ayite's award-winning designs were featured in the Broadway play Jaja's African Hair Braiding, written by Jocelyn Bioh. The play is set in a Harlem salon and explores themes of identity and community among West African immigrant hair braiders.


Ayite's win was met with applause and tears as she accepted the award, dedicating it to her family and collaborators.


This milestone marks a significant moment in Ayite's illustrious career, which includes Broadway credits like A SOLDIER’S PLAY, SLAVE PLAY, and AMERICAN SON. Her work extends beyond theatre, with projects in television and film.


Ayite's Tony Award win amplifies her talent and dedication, paving the way for greater representation and recognition in the industry.
