Big Slim, CEO and founder of Silver Fox and Tunnel Lounge, has stirred discussions about government assistance for the hospitality industry.
In
an interview on 3Music TV's Culture Daily, the business magnate noted that the instability of the cedis continues to impede business since some bills are paid in dollars and that the government fails to provide
incentives during difficult times.
“The
currency really has gotten worse. The government doesn’t support and they have
to realize one thing. Whenever you go on vacation you look for key things;
where you are going to be staying, where you are going to be eating and where
you are going to be partying at. These are the three major things. The nightlife
is a big part of the Ghanaian economy and the government doesn’t support. There
should be incentives. I tried in Nigeria to start a union; a nightlife union. We
went to the government house and they listened to us and even during COVID they
gave us incentives. They said they know you guys are down, don’t pay
entertainment taxes for a year and don’t pay this. Try to get on your feet.”
Big
Slim also emphasized that the hospitality sector has significant obstacles in
the form of competitiveness and divisiveness. He states that due to these
issues, it is difficult for businesses to unite and present a powerful front to
the government in order to lobby for measures that will ensure the sector's
success.
“There’s
no unity in Ghana. It’s like everyone for himself. It’s a competitive business.
I believe in this. In Florida where I started my club on that one street there
are five clubs and we all have our clientele. It’s okay for you to visit me on
Tuesday and visit another on Friday. It’s all love. We all like what we like
and that’s what club owners have to understand. It’s not your customer. He’s
free to make choices. Here in Ghana, they take it personal so how are you going
to help people who think they are going to war with each other?”
Since
the establishment of a branch in Ghana in 2021, Silver Fox, and the latest addition, Tunnel Lounge, have provided people with unforgettable experiences, thereby promoting the
