The Government of Ghana began the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following a mass demolition exercise in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 12, the individuals are Ghanaian nationals whose homes and livelihoods were impacted by the ongoing demolition exercise being undertaken by Ivorian authorities.

The ministry said the first group of 228 returnees arrived in Ghana on Thursday, June 11, while arrangements had been completed for the remaining 99 individuals to return home on Friday, June 12.

“All three hundred and twenty-seven Ghanaian nationals were previously residing in areas affected by the demolition exercise and became stranded having lost their sources of livelihood and lacking the means to secure alternative accommodation in Côte d’Ivoire,” the statement said.

The government provided buses and trucks to transport the affected nationals and their belongings back to Ghana free of charge.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it continues to engage with authorities in Côte d’Ivoire over the welfare of the affected citizens.

According to the ministry, Ivorian authorities have expressed their intention to compensate victims affected by the demolition exercise.

“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise and shall therefore remain actively engaged on the matter to ensure that the promised compensation is received by our affected nationals,” the statement noted.

It added that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan would continue coordinating efforts to ensure affected citizens receive the necessary support.

The ministry said the government remains committed to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians abroad and will intensify efforts to support the successful return and reintegration of those affected.

The government also expressed appreciation to the authorities of Côte d’Ivoire and other stakeholders for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation process.
