Disney is set to bring one of its most beloved animated classics back to the big screen with the live-action adaptation of Moana, which premieres exclusively in theaters on July 10, 2026.
Directed by Thomas Kail, the film stars newcomer Catherine Laga'aia in the title role, while Dwayne Johnson reprises his fan-favorite role as the demigod Maui from the original animated blockbuster.
The movie is a live-action reimagining of Disney's 2016 hit and follows Moana as she answers the ocean's call and embarks on a daring voyage beyond the shores of Motunui alongside Maui to restore prosperity to her people.
The cast also includes John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
The film promises a mix of nostalgia and fresh storytelling, with stunning visuals, large-scale ocean adventures, and new interpretations of the songs that made the original a global phenomenon.
Anticipation for the film has continued to grow following the release of Disney's official trailers, which have showcased breathtaking visuals, beloved characters such as Pua and Heihei, and the return of iconic musical moments including You're Welcome.
The project is also being produced by Dwayne Johnson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and other key creatives behind the franchise, while original Moana voice actress Auli'i Cravalho serves as an executive producer.
As one of Disney's biggest releases of 2026, Moana is expected to be among the summer's major box-office attractions when it arrives in theaters on July 10.
