Organisers of the 2026 Homowo Festival have launched the maiden edition of the Ga Homowo Carnival, a four-day cultural event aimed at enhancing and modernising the celebration of the Ga festival.

Homowo is the annual festival of the Ga people. It commemorates their triumph over famine while promoting unity, thanksgiving, and cultural identity.

The 2026 Homowo Festival marks a historic milestone as it commemorates 200 years of the Ga victory in the Battle of Katamanso.

Launched on Thursday, June 11, the Ga Homowo Carnival will be held from August 6 to August 9, 2026, in the Ga Mashie enclave of James Town and Bukom.

It will feature curated daily experiences: Soobii, Yeeyeeyee, Red Saturday, and Ngorwala.

The opening day will focus on Soobii, a traditional practice that symbolises homecoming and ancestral connection among the Ga people.

Organisers say the event will recreate the historic return of Ga natives to Ga Mashie through a grand procession involving families, sub-chiefs, and community groups.

The second day will celebrate Yeeyeeyee, the Twin Festival, with participants encouraged to wear white as part of an initiative dubbed White Friday. The programme will feature cultural performances, processions, and community engagement activities.

Saturday, which coincides with the climax of the Homowo Festival, will centre on the preparation and sprinkling of kpokpoi, the traditional Ga meal associated with the festival.

The final day, Ngorwala, will be dedicated to thanksgiving, reflection, and renewed unity following the main festivities.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ga Homowo Carnival, Leslie Addo Listowell, said the event has been designed as a contemporary platform for celebrating the Homowo Festival while preserving its cultural significance.

The carnival is being organised with support from the Ga Traditional Council, the National Commission on Culture, the Ghana Tourism Authority, and the Creative Arts Agency.

Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, Wakefield Ackuaku, said the initiative aligns with efforts to preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage.

“The festival provides an opportunity to preserve Ga culture,” he said.

Organisers say the event is expected to attract more than 20,000 participants each day and will offer a blend of culture, music, art, food, and community activities.
