Nigerian sensational Afro-fusion artiste, BNXN, formerly known as Buju has given a piece of advice on how Ghanaian musicians can break into the Nigerian market.
In
an exclusive interview with 3Music TV’s Culture Daily, the OUTSIDE hitmaker explained that artistes from Ghana should
research the market and the kind of audience they want to appeal to and not assume
that working with well-known Nigerian musicians will help them break through
and succeed in the Nigerian music industry.
His submission follows a question asked by Host Jay Foley on how Ghanaians can benefit from Nigerian industry, as evidenced by how Nigerians are gaining from Ghana.
“You
have to know the market and the type of people you are trying to connect with. A
lot of people are lost. A lot of people feel like we just need to make some Afro-beat.
There are people that like some certain type of stuff. You have to know what
you are coming there for. A lot of people run to Lagos and are like I need
Davido, I need Wizkid, I need Burnaboy and you almost try to chase the sound
that they are making just so they appeal to you.”
According
to BNXN, when musicians work with Nigerian producers, the emphasis should be on
the artiste's individuality and the innovative things the musician is capable
of producing.
“When
you start working with producers that don’t necessarily work by your grade of
artiste but work by how really good you are then it works. You start seeing dynamics
to the sound that you don’t even know you could make.”
Additionally, BNXN suggested that musicians make efforts to connect with new producers as they bring on board new ideas that are refreshing. The Nigerian star was in Ghana promoting his most recent song, GWAGWALADA.
