Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted earlier this morning in southern Italy, sending a towering ash cloud into the sky. The eruption was recorded by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which estimated the volcanic plume to have reached approximately 21,325 feet (6,500 meters) above sea level.
Despite the dramatic visuals and intensity of the eruption, authorities have reported no immediate risk to local residents or disruptions to air travel. The local population, particularly those living near the city of Catania in Sicily, are accustomed to Etna’s frequent volcanic activity, which has become a natural part of life in the region.
The INGV’s Etna Observatory continues to monitor the situation closely, but officials noted that the eruption appears to be consistent with the volcano’s typical behavior.
Mount Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most closely observed volcanoes in the world and frequently experiences eruptions of varying scale. Today’s activity serves as a reminder of its dynamic nature but, so far, remains within expected patterns.
