Nelson Mandela’s Grandson Arrested In Carjacking Incident

Mbuso Mandela, 33, a grandson of former South African President Nelson Mandela, was arrested on January 8th, 2025, during a police raid at the late president’s former residence in Houghton, Johannesburg. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) apprehended Mbuso alongside four others on charges of carjacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm. 

The incident unfolded after a Toyota Corolla was hijacked in the Oaklands area of Johannesburg. A tracking device led officers to the Houghton property, where they recovered the stolen vehicle and an illegal firearm. Mbuso Mandela and his co-accused are scheduled to appear in court on Friday to face the charges. 

This arrest adds to Mbuso Mandela’s history of legal issues, including previous allegations of rape, failure to pay child maintenance, and possession of an unlicensed firearm. 

The Houghton residence, once a symbol of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, has become a focal point of family disputes and legal controversies since his passing in 2013. The property has fallen into disrepair amid disagreements among family members over its use and the management of Mandela’s estate. 

The recent events have drawn significant public attention, highlighting ongoing challenges within the Mandela family and raising concerns about the preservation of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
