Netflix has officially renewed its breakout teen drama Forever for a second season, merely six days after its debut on May 8th, 2025. The swift renewal underscores the show’s immediate impact and the strong connection it has forged with audiences.
Created by Mara Brock Akil, Forever is a contemporary adaptation of Judy Blume’s 1975 novel. The series reimagines the classic coming-of-age story, setting it in 2018 Los Angeles and centering on two Black teenagers, Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone) and Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.), as they navigate the complexities of first love, identity, and personal growth in a modern, digitally connected world.
The first season’s eight episodes delve into themes such as consent, mental health, and the pressures of academic and athletic excellence. The narrative follows Keisha, a dedicated track star aiming for Howard University, and Justin, a talented musician managing ADHD and familial expectations, as they experience the highs and lows of young love.
Critics have lauded Forever for its authentic storytelling and nuanced performances. The series boasts a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 84 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating universal acclaim.
The show’s renewal was announced during Netflix’s Upfront presentation on May 14, 2025. Mara Brock Akil expressed her enthusiasm for continuing the story, highlighting the audience’s appetite for emotionally rich, character-driven narratives.
With its renewal, Forever joins a slate of Netflix series that have been greenlit for additional seasons, reflecting the platform’s commitment to diverse and compelling storytelling.
All eight episodes of Forever Season 1 are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
