Rocky Dawuni on Music’s Power: “It’s Not About Chains, It’s About Breaking Them”

Rocky Dawuni on Music’s Power: “It’s Not About Chains, It’s About Breaking Them”
Rocky Dawuni

Rocky Dawuni’s chat on 3Music TV’s Big Conversation was like a masterclass in why music matters. The reggae star, who’s been at it for nearly three decades, didn’t hold back on his belief that music should lift people up, not chain them to materialism. “Music is a divine tool,” he said, leaning in, his voice steady but passionate. “It’s not about shiny lights or naked women on stage. It’s about love, togetherness, and breaking the chains of division.”

Rocky, who’s performed everywhere from Brussels to Bangalore, shared how his music carries a mission to celebrate African identity. He’s not just singing—he’s storytelling, like the highlife legends his mom played for him, Nana Pedu and African Brothers. He worries that today’s Afrobeats, while global, risks losing its soul. “Music without consciousness is just sound,” he said, pointing out how algorithms and commercial pressures can drown out meaningful messages. He’s seen it happen—rap went from revolution to gold chains, and he’s determined to keep his music real.

His new song, I Got a Song, is a case in point. Born from a trip to Australia where he learned about Aboriginal song lines—music as a literal map for survival—Rocky crafted a track with Cedella Marley that’s all about universal harmony. He’s not naive about the industry; he knows you need a tight team and Spotify playlists to get heard. But for him, it’s about resonance, not just hooks. “Fela Kuti’s music still plays in clubs because it had a message,” he said. As he gears up for the video premiere, Rocky’s calling on fans to stream the song and spread its vibe. His humility shines—he credits his producers and team, insisting it’s “not about me, it’s about us.” That’s Rocky: a messenger with a melody, reminding us music can still set us free.
