Spain have been crowned FIFA World Cup champions for the second time after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the 2026 final at the New York-New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.

Forward Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, ending a tense contest that had remained goalless throughout normal time.

The victory secured Spain’s first World Cup title since 2010 and denied Argentina a chance to retain the trophy they won in Qatar four years earlier.

The final was billed as a clash between two football generations, with Spain’s young side led by Lamine Yamal facing an Argentina team captained by 39-year-old Lionel Messi, who was making what is widely expected to be his final World Cup appearance.

Spain controlled much of the match through midfield possession and created the better chances, while Argentina struggled to impose themselves against a disciplined Spanish defence.

The South Americans’ task became even harder after Enzo Fernández was sent off during extra time, allowing Spain to press for the winner. Ferran Torres eventually broke the deadlock to seal the title.

The victory marks Spain’s second World Cup triumph, adding to the title won in South Africa in 2010. The team completed an impressive tournament, eliminating Portugal, Belgium and France in the knockout stages before overcoming Argentina in the final.

Several individual honours also went to Spain after the tournament. Ferran Torres’ performances throughout the competition helped drive La Roja to the title, while several of his teammates were recognised for their contributions during the month-long tournament.

France forward Kylian Mbappé finished as the tournament’s top scorer, claiming the Golden Boot for the second consecutive World Cup.

Spain’s victory sparked celebrations among supporters in Madrid and other cities, while fans also gathered in New York after the final whistle.

In Argentina, supporters expressed disappointment at missing the chance to win back-to-back World Cup titles but praised the team’s run to the final after victories over Egypt, Switzerland, England and other opponents during the knockout stage.

The trophy was presented after the match in front of a capacity crowd, bringing the expanded 48-team tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico to a close.
