The Financial Times noted that while some tracks may feel like filler, others, such as Hammer to the Heart and Black & White showcase Swims’ expressive vocal prowess and willingness to experiment musically. The Guardian highlighted Swims’ retro soul style, reminiscent of Motown and Stax, though it pointed out that some lyrics portray women as enigmatic and deceptive.
