Ghanaian rapper Haeven says female artistes often face unique pressures in the music industry, including appearance expectations and public scrutiny.
Speaking during an interview on Morning Bite, Haeven reflected on the realities of navigating the music scene as a woman.
According to her, female performers often have to consider far more than just their music when preparing for shows.
“When you’re a girl, you have to come with new outfits, nails, hair and everything,” she said.
While acknowledging that appearance can play a role in entertainment, Haeven emphasised that artistes must decide what aspect of their brand they want audiences to focus on.
“If you’re selling the appeal of your appearance, then that’s what people will focus on,” she explained.
However, she said her approach is often different, noting that she sometimes prefers a more relaxed or unconventional style.
The rapper also addressed the challenge of hearing public narratives about herself that she says are not always accurate.
According to Haeven, rumours and commentary from outsiders can sometimes create a version of an artiste that does not reflect reality.
“I’m hearing stories about things people say I did that I didn’t even know about,” she said.
Despite the challenges, she remains committed to her music and artistic expression.
Haeven recently released her new EP GATED COMMUNITY, which she describes as a bold and honest project about reclaiming control over her voice and career.
