Ghanaian rap heavyweight Medikal sat down with the Culture Squad to unpack his latest album DISTURBATION 2, his relationship with Showboy and Shatta Wale, and how fatherhood is reshaping his life and artistry.
The rapper, who describes this phase of his career as a “reassembly of fire and diamonds,” said the project reflects his personal rebirth after years of highs, lows and lessons learned.
When asked about Showboy’s emotional claims of being abandoned by his team during his incarceration, Medikal chose his words carefully saying, “…I feel like he’s misunderstood sometimes,” he said. “I don’t really understand him these days…”
Medikal revealed that DISTURBATION 2 opens with an emotional intro featuring his younger sister recalling a childhood flood that destroyed their home.
“Life was hell after my parents divorced,” he said. “But those moments toughened my mind. Joy wouldn’t be so good if it weren’t for pain.”
From SOMETIMES to BLESSINGS, the project captures the rapper’s unfiltered reflections on hustle, identity and gratitude.
One of the album’s standout tracks, I DID IT features Shatta Wale, a collaboration Medikal describes as “spiritual.”
“Donnie is my brother and my spiritual father,” he shared, referring to Wale by his nickname. “He’s raw, honest and always advises me. He’s been through things, so when he talks, I listen.”
He also reflected on how association in the industry can be both a blessing and a burden.
“Some people act funny towards me just because of him, and others try to get close because of him,” Medikal laughed. “But I don’t listen to anybody. I move with positive energy.”
The rapper, who recently became a father again, admitted that parenting has given him a new sense of purpose.
“It makes the music better,” he said. “You reflect more, pray more, and appreciate life.”He shared that his daughter, Island, may follow her own path someday. “If she grows to love the camera, I’ll support her. But I won’t decide her life. My dad wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer look at me sitting here now,” he smiled.
As Medikal prepares for his BEYOND CONTROL Concert at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 13, he says the new era is about freedom and focus.
With DISTURBATION 2, Medikal reaffirms his position not just as one of Ghana’s most consistent rappers, but as an artiste evolving with purpose, grounded in family, faith, and growth.
