American football may still be new to Ghana, but two Ghanaian-born NFL athletes are determined to change that. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah of the Cleveland Browns and Brian Asamoah II of the Minnesota Vikings are leading a groundbreaking effort to make the sport part of Ghana’s national sporting identity.
The two athletes are partnering with the newly formed Ghana Federation of American Football (GFAF) to build a sustainable system that introduces the game to schools, communities and youth programs across the country.
With the slogan “For Ghana. For the Game. For the Now. For the Future,” this slogan isn’t just branding, it encapsulates a mission rooted in empowerment, discipline and national pride. The project seeks to use American football not merely as a sport but as a tool for education, mentorship and youth development.
Owusu-Koramoah, who also serves as President of the GFAF, emphasised that the project goes beyond sports. It’s about discipline, teamwork and national pride.
According to the GFAF, preparations are underway for the official national launch in March 2026, which will introduce year-round training programs, school partnerships and new facilities dedicated to the sport. The Federation also aims to position Ghana as a key hub for American football in Africa, with ambitions to field a national flag football team for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
This marks the dawn of a new era, one where Ghana joins the global football stage, not as spectators, but as pioneers.
