Accra High Court Blocks Daddy Lumba’s December 13 Funeral

An Accra High Court has granted an injunction filed by the maternal family of the late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba, effectively halting plans to hold his funeral scheduled for December 13, 2025.

The Court has also restrained the release of Daddy Lumba’s body from the mortuary until the substantive case is fully determined.

The ruling follows a legal dispute initiated by five maternal relatives, Obaapanyin Afia Adomah Pakoso, Robert Gyamfi (Wofa Yaw Poku Asuafua), Georgina Gyamfi, Ernestina Fosuh and Nana Afia Kobi Pakoso, who filed a writ on December 3 seeking to assert their customary and legal authority over the late musician’s burial arrangements.

The plaintiffs have asked the Court to prevent Kofi Owusu Abuakwa of Kumasi, along with former members of a dissolved committee, from accessing or operating the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation account at CAL Bank, which was set up to fund funeral and related expenses.

The maternal family contends that, under customary law, they have the rightful authority to manage funeral rites and maintain custody of the deceased’s remains. They expressed concerns that the body could be released and burial plans carried out without their consent.

In addition to halting the funeral, the injunction bars the first defendant from organizing any burial activities and orders the third respondent, Transitions Funeral Home, to retain custody of Daddy Lumba’s body until the resolution of the legal proceedings.

The development adds another chapter to the ongoing controversy surrounding the late musician’s funeral arrangements, as family disputes continue to shape the plans for the final rites of one of Ghana’s most celebrated Highlife artistes.
