Ghanaian DJ and music curator, AD DJ, recently marked an incredible milestone in his career, celebrating a decade of setting dance floors ablaze and redefining the art of DJing. In a special sit-down with Kojo Trip on 3hread Special, AD DJ reflected on his journey, the evolution of the DJing landscape, and what keeps him motivated after 10 years in the industry.
For AD DJ, music has always been part of his DNA. His passion for sound was sparked during his teenage years when he discovered DJ software while experimenting with music files on his first computer. "I didn’t always know I’d be a DJ," he admitted, "but I knew I’d do something related to music."
In 2014, a significant turning point came when AD DJ won a competition that landed him a spot on YFM. Balancing school and weekend radio gigs, he realized DJing was more than a hobby—it was his calling.
Reflecting on the DJing scene over the past decade, AD DJ acknowledged the impact of social media on the craft. “Back then, you had to do an hour-long set to prove yourself. Now, someone can go viral with a 15-second reel. But that doesn’t necessarily translate to skill.”
While he appreciates the ease with which today’s DJs can showcase their talent online, he emphasized the importance of mastering the art for live audiences. “If you’re serious about building a career, you must go beyond the hype and deliver on the big stage.”
Despite his success, AD DJ has faced his share of challenges. Missing out on gigs due to a lack of network advocacy and experiencing undervaluation in the industry are among his lows. However, his resilience and commitment to excellence have propelled him forward.
“The high points are when people gamble on me, give me a platform, and I deliver,” he shared. “Those moments make all the hard work worthwhile.”
AD DJ’s career has taken him far beyond Ghana, with performances in Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa. These international experiences have not only expanded his reach but also deepened his appreciation for diverse audiences.
He shared how a mix of bookings and personal exploration have fueled his travels. “I’ve always wanted to travel. Sometimes I go on vacation, find a popping club, and end up playing. That’s how you build new connections.”
AD DJ is not just a DJ; he’s a curator of experiences. Through his quarterly shows and anniversary events, he has brought unique, immersive celebrations to life. From mountaintop parties in Aburi to exclusive events in Nairobi, his ability to blend music with unforgettable settings has solidified his reputation. As he looks to the future, AD DJ is focused on pushing boundaries.
With a decade of success behind him and an unrelenting passion for his craft, AD DJ stands as a trailblazer on Ghana’s music scene, proving that with dedication, talent, and vision, the possibilities are endless.
Here’s to 10 years of AD DJ—and many more to come.
