Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is edging closer to a historic milestone as his net worth approaches $30 billion, a figure that would make him one of the wealthiest Black men in history. According to Forbes’ latest estimates, Dangote’s fortune currently stands at $29.3 billion, anchored by his flagship company Dangote Cement and buoyed by his $20 billion Lagos oil refinery, which has recently begun early operations.
Dangote, who has held the title of Africa’s richest person since 2008, continues to expand his empire across the continent. His latest venture is a $250 million cement plant in Côte d’Ivoire, his largest facility outside Nigeria, with a production capacity of 3 million tonnes per year. The project underscores his ambition not only to dominate cement production in Africa but also to cement his position as a continental industrial powerhouse.
The Lagos oil refinery, hailed as the largest single-train refinery in the world, is expected to transform Nigeria’s energy sector by reducing reliance on imported fuel while creating thousands of jobs. Together with his cement and sugar operations, it forms the backbone of a business empire that has defined African industrialization in the 21st century.
Since first appearing on the Forbes billionaire list in 2008, Dangote has consistently topped Africa’s rich list, outpacing global peers in wealth creation through his focus on essential industries. As he edges toward the $30 billion mark, his legacy as a trailblazer for African business continues to grow, setting new benchmarks for wealth, scale, and influence.
