Best known for crafting timeless records, celebrated producer and musician, Philkeyz in a conversation with the Culture Suqad, offered rare insight into his creative philosophy, industry frustrations and why independence has been one of his greatest strengths.
Philkeyz spoke passionately about the power of intentional artistry and long-term vision in music. Reflecting on his collaborations with Kizz Daniel, Philkeyz described the process as seamless.
“Sessions with Kizz Daniel are easy because he’s a great writer.”
For him, great music begins with strong songwriting. When an artiste understands melody, structure and storytelling, the studio becomes a space of flow rather than confusion. It’s a synergy he values deeply one built on preparation and talent.
Philkeyz was quick to clarify a common misconception about his craft. “I studied music. I’m not just a producer, I’m a musician.”
That distinction matters. To him, production is not about pressing buttons or assembling beats; it’s about musicality, understanding chords, arrangements, composition and emotion. His formal grounding in music shapes the intentional soundscapes he creates.
It also explains why he holds strong opinions about studio discipline.
In one of the most striking moments of the conversation, Philkeyz addressed a growing concern in today’s music ecosystem.
“Some artistes are clueless when they come to the studio.”
His point wasn’t to criticise, but to challenge. Too many emerging artistes, he suggested, enter sessions without direction, structure or understanding of their own sound. For Philkeyz, preparation is non-negotiable. The studio is a place to refine brilliance not to discover identity from scratch.
Perhaps most powerful was his reflection on self-belief. “I’ve never doubted a song… I’m happy I stayed independent.”
In an industry where major label deals often define success, Philkeyz’s decision to remain independent stands as a statement of confidence. Trusting his ear and instincts has allowed him to protect his creative freedom and business structure. And that brings him to what he believes many artistes overlook.
“If you want to go far in music, you need to start taking your music as a company.”
For Philkeyz, longevity requires structure. Branding, ownership, publishing, distribution and strategy are just as important as talent. The music industry is not merely creative, it’s corporate. Those who understand this early have a better chance at sustaining their careers.
As conversations around artificial intelligence grow louder in global music spaces, Philkeyz remains unconvinced. “I’m never going to be ready to work in the A.I space… A.I can never stand the test of time.”
While technology continues to evolve, he believes authenticity, human emotion and lived experience are irreplaceable elements of timeless music. Trends may shift, but soul endures.
Looking ahead, Philkeyz revealed that his upcoming project, CROSS COUNTRY, is on the way. True to his philosophy, he’s prioritising precision over pressure. In a fast-moving industry obsessed with quick releases, Philkeyz is choosing patience, ensuring that when CROSS COUNTRY arrives, it reflects his standard of excellence.
