Aliko Dangote Steps Down as Chairman of Dangote Cement to Focus on Refinery and Petrochemical Ventures
Alike Dangote
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has officially stepped down as Chairman of Dangote Cement Plc, effective July 2025, marking the end of an era at one of the continent’s most powerful industrial giants.

Dangote made the decision in order to concentrate fully on his flagship oil refinery, petrochemical complex, and fertilizer businesses, which are now central to his group’s long-term strategic focus.

He is succeeded by Emmanuel Ikazoboh, a seasoned business executive, while Mariya Aliko Dangote joins the board, continuing the family’s involvement in the company’s leadership. At the same time, Dorothy Ufot, a renowned commercial lawyer and the board’s first female director, retires after eight years of distinguished service.

Under Aliko Dangote’s leadership, Dangote Cement transformed into Africa’s largest cement producer, with over 52 million tonnes of annual capacity. New plants in Côte d’Ivoire and Itori, Nigeria, are expected to raise that capacity to 61 million tonnes, further cementing its dominance in the region.

This transition signals a strategic shift for the Dangote Group, as it pivots toward energy and industrial transformation across Africa.
