Burna Boy’s Art of Reinvention: Mastering Sampling and Interpolation in Afro-Fusion
Burna Boy
Burna Boy, the Nigerian Afro-fusion artiste, has masterfully utilized sampling and interpolation throughout his discography, blending diverse musical influences to create a unique and globally resonant sound. His adeptness at reimagining elements from various genres and eras has not only paid homage to his musical inspirations but also propelled his career to international acclaim.

Burna Boy’s creative process often involves incorporating elements from existing songs, either by directly sampling portions of recordings or by reinterpreting melodies and rhythms—a technique known as interpolation. This approach allows him to bridge cultural and generational gaps, crafting music that resonates with a wide audience.

For instance, his 2018 hit YE features an interpolation of Fela Kuti’s SORROW, TEARS, And BLOOD, seamlessly blending Afrobeat rhythms with contemporary Afro-fusion sounds. This track not only showcases Burna Boy’s musical versatility but also pays tribute to one of his most significant influences.

In his Grammy-winning album Twice as Tall (2020), Burna Boy continues this practice. The song REAL LIFE contains a sample of T-Pain’s I’M SPRUNG integrating elements of R&B into his Afro-fusion style. Similarly, TIME FLIES includes an interpolation of Marc Anthony’s I NEED YOU, exemplifying his ability to blend diverse musical elements into cohesive and innovative tracks.

Burna Boy’s 2025 single UPDATE exemplifies his skillful use of sampling, featuring a creative sample of Soul II Soul’s 1989 Grammy-winning classic, BACK TO LIFE. This track not only highlights his talent for reimagining classic hits but also underscores his commitment to infusing his music with rich, cross-generational influences.

Burna Boy’s strategic use of sampling and interpolation has significantly contributed to his global success. By artfully blending familiar elements with his distinctive Afro-fusion style, he creates music that resonates across different cultures and age groups. This approach has garnered critical acclaim and expanded his international fan base.

Moreover, his respectful and innovative adaptations of existing works have sparked discussions about the legitimacy and creativity of sampling in modern music. As noted in an article by NativeMag, sampling allows artists to “artfully wear their inspiration on their sleeves,” reimagining and remodeling existing elements to fit a modern context.

Burna Boy’s adeptness at sampling and interpolation not only showcases his deep appreciation for diverse musical genres but also his talent for creating fresh, innovative sounds.
