Eminem’s Publisher Sues Meta Over Unauthorized Use of Music

Rap icon Eminem and his music publishing company, Eight Mile Style, have filed a $109 million lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, accusing the social media giant of copyright infringement. The case alleges that Meta unlawfully allowed 243 of Eminem’s songs to be used on its platforms, including Instagram and Facebook without securing the proper licenses.

According to the lawsuit, Eminem’s songs were widely accessible through Meta’s Music Libraries, enabling users to incorporate them into Reels, Remixes, and Original Audio features. Eight Mile Style claims this practice resulted in millions of user-generated videos featuring Eminem’s music, collectively streamed billions of times, without his authorization.

The publisher argues this constitutes a “significant violation of his rights as an artiste”, citing both lost profits and the diminished value of Eminem’s catalog. The damages sought amount to $150,000 per song per platform, the statutory maximum under U.S. copyright law bringing the total to an estimated $109 million.

Although Meta reportedly removed some of the songs after prior complaints, the lawsuit alleges that instrumental and cover versions remain accessible, prolonging the infringement.

Legal analysts suggest the case could have far-reaching consequences for how music is licensed on social media platforms. If successful, the lawsuit may reshape rules around user-generated content, forcing companies like Meta, TikTok, and YouTube to adopt stricter copyright compliance measures.

As the case unfolds, the music industry and tech world will watch closely. A ruling in favor of Eminem could reinforce the rights of artistes in the digital age, potentially setting a new precedent in the ongoing battle between creators and tech platforms over intellectual property rights.
