Legendary Ghanaian rapper, Flowking Stone, recently appeared on 3Music TV's 3hread Special with host Kojo Trip, where he shared insightful reflections on the evolution of Ghanaian music. The conversation covered his career, the shifts in musical trends, and how he's managed to stay relevant despite these changes.
When asked about the current state of rap music, Flowking Stone emphasized that every generation brings its unique sound. Reflecting on his own journey, he mentioned his breakout hit ONE GALLON, which was released nearly 19 years ago, and how music trends have shifted over the years from crunk music to Azonto, and now to drill. Rather than criticizing the new sounds, Flowking Stone expressed respect for each era’s contribution to the art, noting that “this new generation brought their sound,” and he fully embraces it.
He further elaborated on the difference between making music then and now. According to him, back in the day, studio time was hard to come by. You had to book in advance and arrive prepared. Explaining how today’s technological advancements have made music production easier, allowing younger artistes to thrive as self-sufficient creators. However, he acknowledged that modern listeners demand music at a faster pace, unlike the past when artistes like Kojo Antwi could release music every few years and still hold the public’s attention.
Flowking Stone also touched on his ability to adapt to new sounds and trends, attributing his longevity to his love for learning. He highlighted how being a student of international trends has kept him ahead of the curve. For instance, he foresaw the rise of Drill music even before it gained widespread popularity in Ghana, thanks to his keen ear for global sounds.
One of the key points of the conversation was how Flowking Stone balances staying true to his style while collaborating with younger artists. He says that he enjoys blending his signature rap flow with newer sounds. This mindset has allowed him to work with the new generation of Ghanaian musicians, including acts like Amerado and Kwesi Amewuga.
On the topic of the resurgence of Kumasi’s music scene, Flowking Stone expressed pride in seeing the Ashanti region, particularly with the rise of the Asakaa movement, dominating the music space once again. He also recalled the days when he felt it was just him carrying Kumasi’s music scene on his shoulders.
Regarding the future of Ghanaian music, Flowking Stone gave his perspective on the growing number of independent artistes and whether signing to a label is still necessary. He noted that while being independent has its benefits, like owning one’s masters, signing with a major label can provide the international connections needed to break into global markets.
Flowking Stone also teased upcoming projects, highlighting his latest music video, ON GOD, featuring King Paluta, which was released not too long ago. The video is part of his THE DECISION ALBUM, which boasts collaborations with top artistes like Shatta Wale, Akwaboah, and Mr. Drew. He hinted at future releases, promising fans more exciting visuals and tracks from the album.
In closing, Flowking Stone reaffirmed his commitment to continuously evolving with the times while staying true to his craft. Fans can expect more music and collaborations as he continues to push the boundaries of Ghanaian rap.
The ON GOD video is currently available on YouTube and all streaming platforms, and Flowking Stone encourages fans to check out his THE DECISION ALBUM and RIDE ALONG EP for more of his latest work.
