Nearly three decades after the death of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, a former gang leader has been found guilty of his murder.

Duane “Keffe D.” Davis, the former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was convicted in Las Vegas following a trial that revisited one of the most enduring mysteries in popular culture.

Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in September 1996. His death sparked years of speculation and numerous theories, but no one was arrested in connection with the killing until Davis was charged with murder in 2023.

A key part of the prosecution’s case centred on a 2019 memoir published by Davis. In the book, Davis claimed that he had provided the gun used in the shooting that killed Tupac.

During the trial, Davis and his lawyer argued that the account in the memoir was not a factual confession, but rather an exaggerated story designed to generate publicity and boost book sales.

The jury, however, rejected that argument and reached a guilty verdict after deliberating for only a few hours.

Davis’s own public accounts of the events surrounding Tupac’s death ultimately became a significant part of the case against him, with prosecutors pointing to his previous statements as evidence linking him to the murder.


The conviction marks a major development in a case that remained unsolved for almost 30 years and has continued to fuel public fascination with Tupac’s death.

However, the legal battle may not be over.

Following closing arguments, Davis told the court that he intended to appeal the verdict, potentially extending the legal proceedings surrounding the long-running case.

Tupac Shakur, who was 25 at the time of his death, remains one of hip-hop’s most influential and celebrated artists. Nearly 30 years later, his murder continues to command global attention.
