Werenoi, born Jérémy Bana Owona, France’s biggest-selling music artiste in 2023 and 2024, passed away at the age of 31 on May 17, 2025, in a Paris hospital, leaving the global music community in shock. The rapper, celebrated for his raw lyricism and hits like GUADALAJARA and the album CARRE, which topped French charts in 2023, died hours before a scheduled concert, with French media reporting no public disclosure of the cause of death.

His meteoric rise, marked by a Flammes award for Best Album just days prior, despite his absence due to illness, cemented his legacy as a transformative figure in French rap.

Born in Montreuil, Werenoi’s journey from local talent to national icon was fueled by his gritty storytelling and versatile flow, blending trap and melodic elements. His dominance in France’s music scene was unrivaled, with CARRE and subsequent releases breaking streaming records and earning critical acclaim.

Posts reflected widespread grief, with fans and peers like Naza mourning his loss, emphasizing his impact on both music and culture. The rapper’s ability to connect with audiences through authentic narratives made him a beloved figure, and his sudden passing has sparked tributes across social media.

The lack of clarity surrounding Werenoi’s death has fueled speculation, with some suggesting he was briefly in a coma, though unconfirmed. His passing, underscores the fragility of life, even for a star at the peak of his career.

As France mourns, Werenoi’s music continues to resonate, with fans streaming his discography in droves, ensuring his influence endures. This tragic loss not only robs the industry of a singular talent but also prompts reflection on the pressures faced by artistes in the spotlight.
