Ghanaian breakout rapper Gona Boy is quickly becoming one of the most compelling new voices in the country’s music scene, not only for his sound but for the story behind it.
In a conversation with the Culture Squad, the rising artiste revealed that his journey into music began long before studios, streaming and stage lights. It began in the bustling markets of Techiman, where he worked alongside his parents selling millet and grains.
According to Gona Boy, his musical foundation was shaped by everyday life, not glamour or industry connections. “We dey sell for the market. My father carries me to help am. But after SHS, I was allowed to record,” he recalled, explaining that while many describe Accra as the epicentre of success, his grind started long before the capital city.
When asked how he managed to record music while working and schooling, he credited consistency and sacrifice: market days were for work, weekends for music and studio time was squeezed into whatever free space was left.
His first breakthrough track came in Techiman, later gaining traction when school brought him to Accra in 2022. Now in Level 300, he continues balancing academics with a growing music career, studying Education Psychology while preparing new releases and a headline event titled Believers Concert, dedicated to his fan base, “Believers.”
Despite growing fame, Gona Boy insists his sense of identity hasn’t changed. His music especially tracks like BREATH and GAMBLE GAME are rooted in real experiences, pain, hustle and survival. “Every song is about the moment. I no dey write nonsense,” he emphasised.
With cosigns from acts like Black Sherif and growing national recognition, the rapper says his only goal is to remain grounded, focused and true to his journey. “I never stress about blowing. I just know we go make am.” If early reactions are anything to go by, he might be right.
