Gospel Music Legend Yaw Sarpong Reportedly Passes Away

Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician, composer, and choral director Yaw Sarpong has passed away.

According to confirmed reports, Yaw Sarpong died on 20th January 2026 in Kumasi. His manager, Nana Poku Ashis, confirmed his passing in an interview with MyJoyOnline.com. Further details surrounding the cause of death are yet to be officially disclosed.

His passing comes barely a month after the death of Maame Tiwa, a key member and pillar of Yaw Sarpong’s Asomafɔ music group. That loss had already deeply affected Ghana’s gospel music fraternity, making Yaw Sarpong’s death an even heavier blow to the industry.

For several years, Yaw Sarpong had been battling ill health, which occasionally forced him to step back from public performances as he focused on treatment and recovery. Despite these challenges, his influence and legacy within gospel and choral music remained strong.
