Gyakie Unveils SANKOFA, an Introduction to Her Intimate Debut Album AFTER MIDNIGHT
Gyakie
Ghanaian singer-songwriter Gyakie makes a captivating return with her new single, SANKOFA, a heartfelt track that delves into the power of introspection and emotional authenticity. Co-written with her longtime collaborator Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra), SANKOFA signals the start of a deeply personal chapter in Gyakie’s artistic evolution, characterized by raw emotion and vulnerability.
Inspired by the Ghanaian adinkra symbol Sankofa—meaning to return and reclaim what has been left behind—the single beautifully captures themes of reconnection, closure, and emotional truth. With minimalist production and Gyakie’s evocative vocal delivery, SANKOFA offers a window into the soul of her forthcoming debut album, AFTER MIDNIGHT.
The highly anticipated AFTER MIDNIGHT is a profoundly personal project, drawing inspiration from the quiet, introspective hours after midnight when emotions are most vivid and creativity flourishes. Gyakie describes the album as a reflection of those serene moments:
“Most of the songs on AFTER MIDNIGHT were recorded after midnight. That’s when I find my deepest inspiration. The stillness, the sounds of the night, the peace—it all fuels my creativity.”
The album also weaves in Gyakie’s personal experiences, from moments of solitude and grief to healing and growth. She shares, “I’ve shed many tears after midnight. When I’m feeling low, I wait until I’m home, then let it all out.” The project is further shaped by a cherished family tradition of her mother praying for her and her siblings after midnight—a ritual that continues to hold deep significance. “That time of night carries so much meaning for me,” Gyakie explains.
AFTER MIDNIGHT invites listeners into Gyakie’s inner world, where nostalgia, raw emotion, and self-reflection intertwine. The album is crafted to resonate most powerfully in the stillness of the night, at 12:01 AM, when honesty feels most unfiltered.
