Ghanaian rap star Medikal has never been one to shy away from honesty. Sitting down with the Culture Squad for a new episode of The Big Convo, the multiple award-winning artiste opened up about his evolution from street-hungry rapper to global performer, father and self-managed brand determined to stay authentic in a constantly changing industry.
Reflecting on his journey so far, Medikal revealed that he is still a student of life and music despite years of success.
“Every day we learn new things,” he shared. “I like to learn that’s my mission. Right now I’m still working, still planning and plotting, trying to make things work. I’m also learning how to balance things especially being a father.”
The rapper, who welcomed a son recently, spoke about fatherhood with calm confidence.
Known for effortlessly blending rap with catchy street anthems, Medikal says his music’s strength lies in authenticity.
“People relate to my stuff because it’s real,” he said. “It’s not fiction I just speak my mind on instrumentals. Some songs make you dance, others make you think but at the end of the day, I’m here to entertain.”
Medikal also addressed the mechanics behind his consistent chart presence and collaborations with top names like Shatta Wale, Sarkodie and Jay Bahd. Interestingly, he doesn’t write his lyrics.
“I don’t write. I just like to hear the beat and see what vibe I get from it,” he revealed. “Some of my biggest songs like SOWUTUOM or SHOULDER happened randomly. I just went to the studio one day, recorded and it clicked.”
He recalled how Beeztrap came together with Shatta Wale in less than a day, describing Wale’s verse as “the fastest I’ve ever received.”
“He recorded and sent it back in under 15 minutes. That’s real chemistry.”
But beyond studio moments, Medikal insists that the business side of music is just as crucial as the art itself.
Despite his fame, Medikal runs his career independently without a record label a move he says comes with both challenges and freedom.
His recent project, DISTURBATION 2, symbolizes that personal growth. The album artwork features puzzle piecing itself together, a metaphor for Medikal’s rebirth.
“The first DISTURBATION showed I was scattered. This one shows I’m fixed, I’m back together. I’m stronger, focused and ready for the next phase.”
As one of Ghana’s most talked-about celebrities, Medikal admits that navigating fame hasn’t always been easy. Yet, he remains intentional about what the public sees.
When asked about persistent rumors surrounding his personal life, the rapper laughed them off, choosing not to fuel speculation.
“If you know me, you know I don’t hide anything. People can say what they want. I focus on what matters.”
Even his son’s name, Space, carries intentional meaning. “I named my son Space because I want him to grow into an infinite world,” he explained.
After a decade in music, Medikal isn’t chasing trends or validation. For him, the focus is legacy.
With DISTURBATION 2 marking his evolution both personally and artistically, Medikal stands as one of Ghana’s most adaptable voices balancing artistry, entrepreneurship and authenticity with ease.
“I’m back together,” he concluded with a grin. “Hard, with fire and now, we’re shining with diamonds.”
