Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, a prominent Kumawood actor and filmmaker, issued a stern warning to Ghanaian television stations on April 29, 2025, over the unauthorized airing of his films. In a video shared across his social media platforms, LilWin expressed deep frustration with broadcasters who pirate his movies, particularly those uploaded on his YouTube channel, without permission or compensation. He highlighted the disparity in the industry, noting that while TV stations invest heavily in foreign content like telenovelas, they often exploit local African films by downloading them for free. His bold statement, “I will deal with you in a way you won’t see coming,” underscored his determination to protect his intellectual property and the broader rights of Ghanaian content creators.

LilWin’s warning reflects a growing tension in Ghana’s entertainment industry, where local filmmakers struggle against piracy and lack of institutional support. He criticized the practice of TV stations airing Nigerian and Ghanaian films without licensing agreements, which deprives creators of rightful earnings. The actor emphasized that his films, often produced with significant personal investment, are being exploited by broadcasters who prioritize foreign series over local content. Posts amplified his message, with LilWin explicitly stating, “No Ghanaian TV station should dare air my movies without permission.” This public outcry has sparked discussions about the need for stronger copyright enforcement in Ghana’s creative sector.

The Kumawood star outlined his intent to pursue legal action against offending stations, warning that he would demand substantial financial compensation for unauthorized use of his work. However, he also hinted at alternative measures if legal processes prove slow, stating, “If the case delays, I’ll deal with it in a way you won’t see coming.” This cryptic threat, suggests LilWin’s readiness to take unconventional steps to protect his livelihood, though he did not specify what those measures might entail. His stance has resonated with other local artistes, like Sherifa Gunu, who recently lamented the lack of support for Ghanaian creatives compared to their Nigerian counterparts. The issue ties into broader industry challenges, as seen in cases like StarTimes owing the Ghana Football Association 950,000  dollars for broadcast rights, highlighting systemic disregard for content agreements.

LilWin’s confrontation with TV stations is a call to action for Ghana’s creative industry to address piracy and ensure fair compensation for artistes. His warning, has drawn attention to the economic and cultural toll of intellectual property theft, with broadcasters accused of “paying for telenovelas but pirating African films.” As LilWin prepares to escalate his fight, potentially through legal or undisclosed means, his stand could inspire other Ghanaian filmmakers to demand respect for their work. This moment, fueled by his viral video and amplified by social media, may mark a turning point in the fight against piracy, pushing for a future where local content is valued as highly as foreign imports.
