President John Dramani Mahama has assured that relations between Ghana and South Africa remain strong despite recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including some Ghanaians, in parts of South Africa.
Speaking at Chatham House, a leading policy institute in London, during his five-day official visit to the United Kingdom, President Mahama said the unfortunate incidents should not be allowed to undermine the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
According to him, Ghana and South Africa share deep historical ties dating back to the anti-apartheid struggle and have continued to work closely on issues of mutual interest within Africa and on the international stage.
His comments come in the wake of ongoing anti-immigrant attacks in parts of South Africa, where foreign nationals have reportedly faced threats, harassment and destruction of businesses.
The incidents have raised concerns among several African countries, including Ghana, whose citizens live and work in South Africa.
President Mahama condemned the attacks and stressed that no individual should be targeted because of their nationality or country of origin.
He said Ghana remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad through diplomatic channels and continuous engagement with South African authorities.
The President indicated that Ghana’s government has maintained communication with officials in South Africa regarding the welfare and security of Ghanaians affected by the violence.
He expressed confidence that the South African government is taking steps to address the situation and prevent further attacks.
President Mahama also cautioned against allowing the actions of a few individuals to define the relationship between the two nations.
He noted that the bonds between Ghana and South Africa extend beyond politics and diplomacy to trade, education, tourism and cultural exchanges.
The xenophobic attacks have sparked renewed debate across the continent about the protection of migrants and the need for African countries to strengthen cooperation in addressing economic and social challenges that often fuel hostility toward foreign nationals.
