Presec Old Boys Share Hilarious Tales of Punishments and School Rituals
3Music TV

Former students of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec) from the 2015 batch brought laughter and nostalgia to 3Music TV’s Big Conversation as they recounted the trials and tribulations of their high school days, particularly the infamous punishments and rituals that shaped their experiences. The engaging discussion revealed the strict yet formative environment of one of Ghana’s top boys’ schools.

The alumni shared vivid memories of their encounters with seniors and teachers, who enforced discipline through creative and sometimes grueling punishments. One alumnus, nicknamed “Beho,” described his clever tactic to avoid freshman hazing by wearing brown shorts typically reserved for seniors, blending in until his classmates inadvertently exposed him. Another recalled a humiliating punishment for arriving late as a day student, being forced to empty a massive dustbin single-handedly while still in his school uniform, leaving him reeking and humbled. “The Beast,” known for his dining hall dominance, recounted clearing hundreds of bowls as a form one student after a prefect’s order, only to be rewarded with extra food for his efforts.

The conversation also delved into school rituals, such as early morning inspections by a former military housemaster, Mr. Ado, who woke students at 2 AM to check toothbrushes, sponges, and buckets. This left students exhausted by class time, often dozing off during lessons. Another ritual involved “breaking bounds,” the term for sneaking off campus, with one alumnus recounting a notorious incident where students escaped via a passage to attend a fanfare at Firestone, only to be caught during a PTA meeting and punished with weeks of weeding.

Despite the challenges, the alumni spoke fondly of these experiences, noting that they built resilience and camaraderie. As they plan a 10th-anniversary celebration with a bonfire, career talks, and a blood donation drive, the former students expressed pride in Presec’s legacy and its role in shaping their character.
