A sporting force is rising!
One built not on green pitches but on courts.
The Spintex Knights Basketball Club is rewriting the narrative of Ghanaian sports, inspiring a generation to see basketball not just as a pastime but as a path to opportunity.
On today’s Culture Daily Sport Direct episode hosted by C-Real, viewers were treated to an inspiring conversation with Dr. Opoku Antwi, co-founder and president of Spintex Knights Basketball Club and coach Thomas Amediku, one of the driving forces behind Ghana’s basketball renaissance.
For Dr. Opoku Antwi, basketball was never merely a game. He discovered the sport during his days at Achimota Secondary School and it soon became his ticket to the world. Through basketball, he earned scholarships for his Master’s and PhD degrees abroad, experiences that showed him how the sport can change lives. H recalls, “When I came back home, I realized basketball could be a tool to empower Ghana’s youth. Many young people can use it to access education and international opportunities just like I did.”
That passion led to the founding of the Spintex Knights, a club born from a desire to build structure and hope in a sport that had long been underfunded and underrecognized in Ghana.
For Coach Thomas Amediku, the journey began in his community of Adenta, where he noticed a void for young people who didn’t play football. “I couldn’t afford football boots when I was growing up…” he admits. “…so I taught myself basketball and when I returned after university, I wanted to give other kids that same chance.”
What started as a community effort grew into a professional passion. Today, Amediku is one of the most respected basketball coaches in Ghana, mentoring athletes who dream of both international careers and academic success.
The Spintex Knights compete in the Greater Accra Basketball League (GABL), the largest basketball league in Africa by participation, boasting 40 teams across men’s and women’s divisions.
Despite the absence of a national basketball team for more than a decade, the Knights have become a symbol of progress and professionalism. Their players compete fiercely against elite teams like Nungua Coastal, Braves of Customs and Ghana Police and Immigration.
Beyond winning games, the club emphasizes education, discipline and personal growth. Over the past seven years, the Knights have helped more than 60 young athletes secure sports scholarships, both locally and internationally. Eight current players are pursuing Master’s degrees in fields like data analytics and marketing, proof that basketball in Ghana can be both an academic and athletic springboard.
The Knights are setting their sights high on the Basketball Africa League (BAL), a prestigious competition organized by the NBA and FIBA Africa. Ghana belongs to Zone 3, which includes the Ivory Coast, Liberia and Benin, all battling for limited slots to the continental stage.
Last year, the Spintex Knights ranked among the top 25 teams in Africa, an achievement that underscores their rapid ascent. Yet the journey is far from easy. Competing internationally demands funding and that’s where community support becomes vital.
To sustain their vision, the Knights launched the One Dreamfundraising initiative, calling on 10,000 supporters to each donate $20 toward the team’s Road to BAL.
Dr. Opoku Antwi explains: “It’s not just about us. We want every Ghanaian to feel part of this dream to show that basketball can unite and uplift us all.”

Donation information
Donations can be made via their official website and the campaign has already attracted fans, sports influencers andGhana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, who commended the team for setting new standards for dedication and discipline.
The Minister emphasized his commitment to supporting all sports, not just football, saying, “Basketball is not a recreational sport it’s an elite sport that opens doors for young people.”
The story of the Spintex Knights is one of passion, perseverance and purpose. With limited sponsorships and personal funds keeping the dream alive, Dr. Opoku Antwi and Coach Amediku have built more than a club, they’ve sparked a movement.
In a country where football reigns supreme, the Knights are proving that Ghana’s sporting future can be diverse, dynamic and inclusive.
